2010-05-04-05: Spanish EU Presidency Conference on 'Valuing VET competences' (Zaragoza, Spain)

The conference is organized as the main forum for Vocational Education and Training. This forum will present results of best practice with reference to the recognition of professional competences acquired through work experience.
It will also analyze the role of Information and Guidance in relation to this recognition. The end aim of recognition and highlighting professional competences is essential to:
  1. improve the self-esteem of citizens through official recognition of the professional competences they have acquired and which to date have no official validity for employment or other purposes.
  2. encourage citizens, once their professional competences have been assessed and accredited, to return to the academic world to complete the training needed to obtain VET certification.
  3. improve the qualification level of employees and contribute to the situation where employers and employees are aware of the direct relationship between better qualifications, better salaries and better in-company promotion.

In addition, the meeting will also act as a forum for debate on the increasing importance of general, specific and transversal competences for maintaining the employment of citizens and improving their employability.

Objectives:
  • Promote communication and contact between all the social and political agents involved in VET.
  • Provide the appropriate forum for the members of the Commission, Europeanagencies and social agents to update information on VET related topics.
  • Use the mutual exchange of information as a mechanism for developing EU policies through an open coordination method.
  • Facilitate discussion on the importance of education and training for eachand every citizen and the fundamental role of each of the agents involved to ensure that this becomes a reality.
